Why Your Wedding Oficiant Is So Important

wedding officiant

When it comes to wedding vendors, most couples start by looking at florists, photographers, hair and makeup artists and DJ portfolios. While these services are all essential in making your bridal dreams come true, today we want to highlight how important it is to choose the right officiant .

The officiant , celebrant, master of ceremonies, or wedding MC’s job is one of the most vital roles on your wedding day, even though it takes the shortest time to complete.

The officiant will be at the ceremony area early to greet guests and reassure the groom, who might be feeling a little nervous. The officiant will ask the guests to be seated and give a warm welcome, including any wishes the couple has for the ceremony, such as no phones or photos.

A lot of the mastery of officiant  work is subtle. When the bride arrives at the altar, the officiant  should create space for her to breathe, relax and be in the moment before launching into the ceremony. The words spoken should be paced nicely with time given so the emotion and feelings can unfold naturally.

As a wedding videographer, I am seeing officiant’s work up close and personal. I use the word personal because what is more intimate than a couple joining together in marriage? The best officiants carry themselves with warmth and grace and deliver the ceremony in a natural way. They should be capable of making guests laugh when the ring won’t easily slip onto the groom’s finger and be formal in the serious parts of the ceremony.

A wedding on a sandy shore will be very different from a traditional chapel ceremony, so an officiant  should perform to fit the occasion and deliver a ceremony in the style the couple expects.

Before the big day arrives, your officiant  should outline the words that will be spoken and offer to help with your vows. You can expect a wedding rehearsal and support leading up to the day if you need it.

A professional officiant  should also cover what will happen in unexpected situations. While it’s unlikely, as a wedding videographer, I have seen crazy weather come in fast, kids have epic meltdowns and tears that nearly turned into rivers. Your officiant is in control of all these occurrences that probably won’t happen.

It’s nice to know this person has the experience and calmness to handle whatever could happen. We understand couples do imagine these things or perhaps watch too many bridal reality TV shows, so we get why you worry about every possible hiccup. Your officiant  has this and I’m always right there also to help out if needed.

You should really like your officiant as this is the person you choose to execute the most important and sacred event of your life. While the catering team, videographers and decorators all work long hours on your wedding day, an officiant  is usually there for about an hour. But don’t underestimate how vital the role is. Research well and take your time looking for the officiant who will conduct the wedding ceremony and make it truly soulful and unique to you as a couple.
